I worked for 23 years in the design and brand identity industry in London, taking my MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins in 2006. I returned to the lakes in 2009 and have continued to exhibit and sell nationally and internationally, and develop new work. The florals of the traditional china at Sharrow Bay suit my work, so it’s a marriage made in heaven.

Karen has been working with various media for around 25 years, finding inspiration from a variety of sources, particularly the landscape, both natural and manmade.
It was only recently that she followed her dream to formally train to pursue a career in art. She took a Foundation Degree in Drawing with Cumbria University at Kendal College in 2011, where she developed her interest in printmaking. Over the years her work has been exhibited at galleries and venues throughout Lancashire and Cumbria and she now also teaches art in Adult Education classes as well as for private groups and individuals
Influenced by the the connections that Cumbria enjoys with China and the many visitors to Bowness and Windermere, one of her sheep draws on Chinese art and symbols in recognition of the many Chinese visitors to Bowness and Windermere. Her other sheep will be painted blue as a reference to water and in particular Lake Windermere and will contain transferred images relating to the Cruise boats and sailing on this lovely lake.

I draw and paint animal portraits. I specialise in Cumbrian animals, in particular, the Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cows we farm at Yew Tree in Coniston.
I plan to use the sheep raddle powder we use on our Herdwicks at Yew Tree farm, to mix up an acrylic paint to use to draw /paint designs of herdwicks onto the main herdwick model. The designs will be applied in such a way that they will look like the sheep model is marked with traditional ‘smit’!

Through my love of the local countryside and walking, I see the landscape in blocks of colour and this is reflected in my paintings. The Lake District is a very special place for me. I use to come here when I was a young girl and and I now bring my children to this wonderful place and we walk the fells. I would be delighted to be part of such a wonderful project. Read More
